The Testing/Contact Tracing Process

The Testing/Contact Tracing Process

Through UNI

person coughing

Student/employee experiences COVID-19 symptoms, calls Student Health Center to be tested, and reports symptoms beyond their baseline through the Panther Health Survey.

quarantine

SHC conducts the test, advises the person to quarantine immediately, and sends the test to the State Hygienics Lab via a daily courier. Test results are typically received within 2-4 days.

testing

SHC contacts the individual with those results within 24 hours. SHC also sends an email with instructions. If positive, the individual is instructed to self-isolate for a total of 10 days (starting with the date of their symptoms, or the date of their test if they did not experience symptoms).

patients

For Students: SHC retrieves their class schedule and reaches out to any students who may need to quarantine. (This occurs within 1-2 days of the positive test result.) SHC also advises all affected students to fill out the Panther Health Survey, which sends notifications to DOR and provides a link to the Dean of Students office, which can provide assistance in notifying instructors of upcoming COVID-related absences.

For Students and Employees: SHC provides a reminder for individuals to report their positive test through the Panther Health Survey.

spread

Meanwhile, the Iowa Department of Public Health, which also received the positive test result, contacts the individual to see who else they were exposed to (outside of class) and reaches out to those people to let them know they need to quarantine for a total of 14 days (starting with the date of the exposure).

*Exposure is defined as being within 6’ of a person who is COVID-positive for 15 minutes or longer.

doctor

SHC and DOR provide ongoing health and living support to the student (if they live on campus). This includes telehealth visits.

The Testing/Contact Tracing Process

Through TestIowa

person coughing

Student/employee experiences COVID-19 symptoms, goes to a TestIowa site to be tested. UNI encourages students to provide their local address when undergoing testing at a TestIowa site - this ensures the Black Hawk County Health Department receives the information. (IDPH and BHCHD are in regular communication with the Student Health Center contact tracers, so that we can conduct classroom contact tracing if necessary and provide these students/employees with the necessary resources.)

testing

TestIowa conducts the test and sends it to the State Hygienics Lab. Test results are emailed to the patient. Individuals report status through the Panther Health Survey.
